In the accounting industry, it can be difficult to identify your noble purpose. Other than working hard and performing well for the company that employs me and the client that pays for my services, how am I contributing to the greater good in my professional life? Am I having a meaningful impact to the world around me? For the first time in my career, I can answer these questions!
There are certainly more selfless people and noble careers out there, but I believe I’m fulfilling my purpose by creating a business that is vision and value-driven and seeks to create a collaborative environment that whole-heartedly honors each employee’s contribution and empowers them to do great things. And, let’s face it, these days just simply being a job creator feels really great!
From the get-go, building a viable business model that fulfills our employees’ passion for excellence, achieves our clients’ objectives, and provides a healthy amount of annual growth has been the primary focus for me and Candus. Earlier this month, we held our inaugural planning meeting to set the focus. We are so excited about what we accomplished and want to share it with all of you!
To keep focused on the planning session and be as effective and distraction free as possible, we went offsite for two days.
Over those two days, we worked through the following:
- Formalized our Vision.
- Defined our Core Values.
- Developed 1-, 3-, and 10-year targets.
- Documented our 1st quarter goals.
- Defined our discipline for execution.
Our core values are our roadmap and what we will use to drive our vision and culture now and for years to come! Everyone that works for us and in everything we do we exhibit the following values:
Integrity – Honesty above all else, always doing the right thing, putting the client first by acting in their best interest, maintaining the highest level of ethics and morals.
Adaptable – Can navigate through change at any level and always striving to continually learn, grow, and improve one’s self.
Passion and perseverance – The ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. Seeing the project and client through to success.
Enthusiastic positivity – Exudes energy, optimism, and creativity.
Supportive – of our colleagues, our clients, and our community. As our name indicates, not only do we support our clients’ growth initiatives, but we also support each other and the community.
Brave – Taking calculated risks. Don’t be afraid to speak up regarding new ideas, a fresh perspective, or something gone wrong. Be confident and courageous in your approach to client solutions or a difficult problem. Having the confidence to take your seat at the table, evaluate the situation, and figure out the solution.
Fun – Laughter is the best medicine. We laugh loud and often, and we want the entire company to know it is okay to have fun! Our work is often stressful due to tight deadlines and conflicting priorities, so it is imperative to surround ourselves with fun-loving and interesting colleagues.
Through creating this business and establishing our culture, Arcus Advisors is on its way to achieving our vision of a value-driven firm that attracts and retains the brightest and bravest and those rare accountants looking for their purpose beyond the balance sheet.
